If you've checked my facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/Inkblot… lately, you've probably seen that I've been working on several construction-oriented cosplay projects. At the top of the list is a classic Dalek from Doctor Who, acting as our sort of "proof of concept" to make sure my build team and I can properly coordinate a large-scale project like this.
Stage one of Operation Dalek was a little less than successful, but we've rallied with a new plan of attack. We were using some blueprints that BBC released in a magazine back in the 1980s. We read over the instructions, figured out what we needed, and headed to the hardware store. After getting there, we started to realize that we had a few problems.
----------------------------------------------
1) Since the UK is pretty indecisive about measurement units (or at least was in the 80s), half the instructions were written in feet and pints while the other half were written in metric units. This is a problem in an American hardware store.
2) The materials list told us to get sheets of plywood that were 5x5 feet. The largest our hardware store sold was 4x4. Oops.
3) Our store doesn't sell chicken wire. That's hardly surprising in a suburban hardware store, though. I can let that slide.
3) Apparently our store doesn't sell ball bearings either. What kind of hardware store doesn't sell ball bearings? More importantly, what could I possibly need exactly six ball bearings for in making a Dalek?
4) Exactly how much is "one jar" of shellac? In my time on Earth, I've seen some very big jars and some very little jars. There's quite a range in there.
5) No smaller sink plungers at the store. Even then, apparently a "plunger" these days looks nothing like an actual plunger, looking more alien the Dalek I want to put it on.
----------------------------------------------
Okay, so we ran into a lot of problems. I'll admit that much. Still, this project is a go as we root our way through blueprints and mock-ups. We'll be having "Take Two" of Operation Dalek Stage One this weekend, hopefully with more fruitful results. Should be ready for the fall, although I'm still not sure which convention it will be in.
I'll be sure to keep you posted with WIP shots as they come up! I'll also be posting some rough sketches and whatnot of other projects as we draft them.
Stay frosty, mates.
Watson out.

Cosplay Tutorial: Gas Mask 101
I get a lot of questions about masks when I share my costume work, but the over whelming majority of them are about gas masks. Where to find them, if they're safe, how much they cost, and that kind of thing. Weirdly enough, there aren't really any tutorials on it out there. Go figure! I figured with all the questions I get, there has to be at least some interest out there, so I got to work on my first tutorial.
To meet the needs of my fellow costume and cosplay enthusiasts, I have written Gas Mask 101, the perfect primer for all of your gas-masking needs! It is now posted on my Tumblr page for your reference. This will be the first of many on
Cosplay Semantics: Cosplay or Costume?
I wrote this article for my cosplay blog on Tumblr, but I decided it was worth cross-posting to DA. If you want to share this article with your fellow tumblrites, you can find the original here!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why are the words "costume" and "cosplay" now completely interchangeable?
At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, I seriously don't get this. The two are related, but there's a very distinct difference between the two. It's kind of like trying to use the words "round" and "circular" interchangeably. You might often be right, and most people will understand what you're
Tumblr Time!
Finally got a tumblr account for cosplay stuff. Bout time, too!

I keep getting questions about how to do some of the different things I have in my costumes, and all my cosplay buddies all seem to be on the bandwagon. Judging by that, I figured it was about time! I'll be using this Tumblr page to post tutorials, WIP shots, and other stuff. Should be a great time all around! Give me a follow and I would be absolutely delighted to follow you back. Just drop your tumblr URL in the comments!
If you want to follow me on another page, here's a quick recap of the places you can find my work.

Rorschach fans, listen up!
After the overwhelmingly positive responses from fellow Deviants, I recently submitted my Rorschach cosplay to a rather large contest on Facebook. You've all been fantastically supportive so far, and would absolutely love to see a turnout of fellow deviants' support at the competition!
Voting is super easy! Here's what you have to do.
1) Like this page: https://www.facebook.com/LivingIchigocosplays
He's the guy running the contest. All votes that don't also "Like" his page will be ignored, so don't forget to do this!
